The 7.9 Richter scale earthquake in the waters off Southern Sumatra, near Padang, on 30 September 2009, resulted in 234 buildings in Singapore experiencing tremors. The affected buildings are mainly located in the central, northern, and western parts of Singapore comprising - 187 HDB buildings, 16 Private Residential Buildings and 31 Commercial Buildings.

Go-karters can soon race at Kartright Speedway due to open on October 1, located at the Arena Country Club in Upper Jurong Road.
The new race track is the brainchild of avid go-karters, Jude Benny, Allan Teo and Kevin Kwee. With the opening of the $2 million track, the public can race in go-karts at $30 per 10 minutes slots. Select slots will be reserved for competitive karters.

Extreme skateboarders, BMX riders and Inline Skaters can look forward to a new facility at East Coast Park, with the opening of "Xtreme SkatePark @ East Coast".
A joint development by the National Parks Board (NParks) and the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), the Xtreme SkatePark is the first skate park in Singapore built to international competition standards.
