The murder of Coco, a Malaysian prostitute at the back alley of Flanders Square, off Petain Road in 'Litttle India', has thrown the spotlight on this lesser known red-light area. The other better known red-light areas are Geylang, Desker Road and Chinatown. Accepted as designated red-light areas, sex workers are allowed to ply their trade. |

Speaker's Corner at Hong Lim Park has come alive since rules governing the use of the park was liberalised on 1 September 2008. Taking over from the Police, the NParks now manages the application for permits at its website - www.nparks.gov.sg. Usage can be for speeches, demonstration or public performance and exhibition. More than 60 applications have since been received since September 1.
Todate, Mr Tan Kin Lian, former NTUC Income CEO, is believed to hold the 'record' of attracting more than 500 listeners for each of his 4 rallies, speaking on 'mis-selling' by financial institutions of complex financial products after the collapse of Lehman Brothers. |

Residents of Serangoon Gardens were upset when news got to them that the former Serangoon Gardens Technical School will be converted to a dormitory to house foreign workers. The vacant building is located at Burghley Drive.
Serangoon Gardens is one of the oldest residential estate in Singapore. Mainly middle class, the estate comprises mostly landed properties. A petition against the move, with more than 1000 signatures, have been presented to their MPs.
The Ministry of National Development, on 3 Oct 2008, announced that they will proceed with the dormitory development.
