Bukit Brown Cemetery, located between Lornie Road and the Pan Island Expressway, was earmarked for redevelopment as early as 1991. The cemetery dates back to the 1890s and is the resting place for many of Singapore's early settlers and well known pioneers.

In September 2011, the Land Transport Authority announced that a new expressway, parallel to Lornie Road will be built cutting across the 86 ha site. More than 5000 graves will be affected. Exhumation will begin in a year's time.

The Singapore Heritage Society, many amateur historians and enthusiasts are petitioning against the decision. Many have since joined forces to document the affected graves. The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies have since been commissioned by the government to document the affected graves. This event has generated much interest, resulting in many people visiting Bukit Brown Cemetery out of curiosity.
