The Malaysian railway network (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) ceased its operation in Singapore on 30 June 2011. Through a landmark agreement between Singapore and Malaysia, all land occupied by the railway will be returned to Singapore, in exchange for land parcels in Marina South and Ophir-Rochor.
The Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, built in 1931, and Bukit Timah Station, will be conserved as heritage buildings. The closure was nostalgic, as the railway line connected Singapore to the Malaysian network for the past 80 years. The Malaysian railway network, now stops at Woodlands Train Station.
The railway land stretching from Keppel Road to Woodlands will be retained as a 'green corridor' for nature lovers and hikers to enjoy. All railway stock and equipment have since been removed. Most of the land will remain untouched, while certain areas have been earmarked for upgrading. The greenery along this corridor is indeed a gem.
