Black & White Houses & Buildings PDF Print E-mail

Black and White houses and buildings  were built during the British colonial days of Singapore. Typify by its characteristic black and white painted exterior, the plaster are painted white while the wooden cross beams are painted black. These buildings are mostly bungalow houses, while some may be rows of walk-up apartments.  Such buildings are normally clustered in large residential areas, the whole area having matured trees and plants, often containing indigenous flora and fauna.

In land scarce Singapore, many black and white houses can still be found at several places in Singapore. Most of these black and whites houses are owned by the Singapore government, as these buildings were once the homes of British colonial administrators of Singapore or part of the British military area, which once occupied almost a quarter of the land area of Singapore. Singapore was once the pride of the British military and was known as 'Gibraltar of the East'.

Black and white houses elude a certain nostalgic character, reminiscent of British colonial days. These houses are in demand and sought after by many high end expatriate executives. Some of these buildings at certain areas have been converted to restaurants and entertainment hubs.
